Masked Ghouls[1] (originally lowercased)[2] are Pumpkin Zone enemies in Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins. They are walking enemies wearing hockey masks with daggers stuck in them, a reference to Jason Voorhees, the main antagonist of the Friday the 13th film series.

Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins[edit]
They make their only appearance in Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins, as exclusive enemies of the Pumpkin Zone, specifically in the first and final stages. Functionally, they act the same as Goombas: any method of attack is enough to defeat them.
Super Mario Kodansha manga[edit]
In the last chapter of the Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka 1 volume of the Super Mario Kodansha manga, five Masked Ghouls emerge from the shadows, making Mario and Princess Peach initially believe they are about to fight multiple Jason Voorhees's, only to discover they are Goombas with Halloween masks. The Goombas are then squashed by they resurrect as Ghost Goombas.
In Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka 3, a Masked Ghoul can be seen as one of the several enemies that Mario and Luigi quickly pass by inside Wario's Castle.
Super Mario-kun[edit]
A single Masked Ghoul appears in the background of the Pumpkin Zone entrance in chapter 8 of volume 8 of Super Mario-kun.
Another Masked Ghoul can be spotted in the final chapter of the arc, when Luigi brings all of the freed Mario Land's creatures to witness the final battle.

Unlike most mainline Super Mario titles, Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins did not receive officially localized enemy indexes at the time of its release on the Game Boy and not all enemies are listed in its instruction booklets. Consequentially, most available non-Japanese names come from localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.
